OUR STORY
We create products for the skin, body, and home, inspired by the majesty and myth of the desert.
Our name is drawn from the desert city of Twentynine Palms, known as the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park—an area renowned for its otherworldly rock formations and mesmerizing night skies. It was this landscape that influenced our products and their ingredients, from antioxidant Prickly Pear to fatty acid-rich Evening Primrose.
The company was born of a chance encounter between actor, musician, and investor Jared Leto and Jonathan Keren, who founded Mediterranean wellness brand Maapilim in 2016. Leto was drawn to the aromas and textures of Maapilim’s products, and arranged to meet with Keren. In an act of kismet, the two hit it off and began dreaming of new horizons and the potential for creative partnerships.
Developed with high-quality botanical extracts, our formulations are intended to accompany daydreams, fantasies, trips, bolts of inspiration, and moments of stillness—the quiet slivers of our day-to-day that sustain us. Our products are developed for all people, personality types, and professions—but especially for those that resist limits and boundaries: those who relish freedom and the great unknown.
OUR INGREDIENTS
Developed, tested, and refined in the United States over several years, the products were created using both ingredients local to the Californian desert and other drought-tolerant species renowned for their ability to thrive in arid settings.
Some of these ingredients—like Aloe Vera and Jojoba—are widely celebrated for the benefits they offer; others—such as Elderberry and Amaranth—may be lesser known, but have been shown to contain skin- and hair-supportive properties.
Prickly Pear, for instance, is a potent antioxidant, and, applied topically, helps to hydrate and comfort skin. Evening Primrose, which adapts well to dry climates, delivers moisturizing benefits. Elderberry has been used for centuries in folk medicine. In skin care, it is a non-perturbing ingredient that may help to reduce irritation and the appearance of redness. It’s also a mild astringent, helping to tighten pores.
These botanical extracts are complemented by other scientifically backed (and perhaps more recognizable) ingredients including Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol, and Ceramides to yield a suite of highly effective products for the skin, hair, and body.
All of our formulations are vegan, cruelty-free, and developed without artificial fragrance. They can be used individually or in combination with one another to deposit a subtle trace of the desert.
Our product development process carefully considers the impact of various ingredients (and their provenance) on the planet and our bodies.
In addition to excluding ingredients on the EU’s prohibited substances list, a sizable number of ingredients have been excluded from the product range due to potential concerns about safety, irritation potential, or the environment. These include:
- Sulfate surfactants (SLS and SLES)
- Parabens and formaldehyde-releasing agents
- Synthetic fragrances and color
- Cyclic silicones
- Acrylates
Our products contribute to the production of certified sustainable palm oil following the Mass Balance supply chain model as a minimum standard.
PACKAGING
From the beginning, some of our most important—and most complex—conversations have focused on packaging, and how we could bring these formulations to life while minimizing waste and excess.
Across our skin care range and for our Hand Cream, we chose to give priority to glass and aluminum, which are highly recyclable at end of life. Biophotonic MIRON glass, with its distinctive purple color, was chosen for the skin care range. This material helps ensure the stability of the products and protects natural ingredients from degradation.
For safety in the bathroom, formulations for the body and hair are packaged in 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic vessels with reusable plastic pumps. Using 100% PCR reduces the need for the production of new materials, and helps to create value for recyclable plastics already in circulation. (Our bottles can also be recycled after use.)
In the very near future, refill pouches (which use up to 80% less plastic) will also be available for these products. We are continually seeking to lessen our footprint, and are working toward a fully recyclable solution for refill pouches.
Our shipping boxes are made from 100% recycled paper. They’re also free of plastic coating, which means they’re readily recyclable.
